Meet the Artist

A Statement from Catherine LaPointe Vollmer

"I’ve always wanted to travel the world. At first, I wanted only to visit the big cities. Eventually I came back to my North Country roots and rediscovered my love of wild spaces. My retro-inspired travel poster designs strike a balance between celebrating the natural wonders and the local culture of the area being depicted.

My style is inspired by the national park posters of the 1930s, created as part of the Works Progress Administration. The vintage posters were originally printed using no more than 6-8 colors. Although I work with digital vectors instead of silkscreens, drawing my posters with a stylus and tablet instead of a pencil, I try to remain true to the limited colors and level of detail that silkscreen technology of that era made possible.

I really admire the work that the Chamber of Commerce is doing to frame the narrative around St. Lawrence County, and I am glad that they asked me to be a part of it. This place has so much to offer if only you know where to look. Part of the joy of being an artist is being able to dig into a project and discover something new, and to share that discovery with anyone who views your artwork. I hope that these posters will help to shine light on some of the wonderful things to love about the North Country."
